What My First Close-Up Competition Taught Me (and Why I’m an Award-Winning Magician)

This month, I joined South London Magic Club’s annual close-up contest, performing alongside some incredible talent, including Bron Ivy (@bronivymagic), who took second place, and David Klass (@klass.david), this year’s champion.

As a complete newcomer, I’d never performed my routine live before. I carried a pack of cards on every commute, practised sleights between meetings, and rehearsed my script while walking the dog. On debut night, I presented to an audience of magicians and a few “muggles”… and walked away with Best Newcomer (first-time entrant) and a Top 3 finish overall.

What Winning Best Newcomer Really Means

Being named Best Newcomer isn’t about being an amateur, it’s proof that hard work and a fresh perspective can stand out, even under the watchful eyes of seasoned magicians.

Earning a Top 3 spot alongside Bron and David showed that my blend of playful misdirection and genuine connection resonated with both judges and the audience.

A Fool Us Flashback

A couple of years ago, I entered the club’s Fool Us style contest with my first original routine and earned a coveted Fool Us medal for genuinely baffling the judges.

That medal still sits on my desk as a reminder: innovation matters as much as execution.

Lessons I Took Away

  • Preparation beats nerves - the more you rehearse, the freer you are to connect, not just perform.

  • Originality counts - adding your twist to a classic can make all the difference.

  • Keep evolving - every performance is a new chance to grow and refine your craft.
