Sometimes the smallest details make the biggest difference. For me, it's a humble deck of playing cards I carry in my jacket pocket every day, a USPCC Bicycle deck, to be precise. Here's why.
Keeping My Skills Sharp, Even on the Train
On a typical London commute, I'll pull out the deck and run through a quick flourish, deal cards one-handed, riffle the edges, or practise a control I’ve been refining. The train becomes my rehearsal space, keeping my hands sharp and my mind focused between shows.
Everyday Magic in Unexpected Places
Recently, I was waiting for a friend in a café when I noticed a family at the next table. The kids were restless, the parents on their phones. I quietly introduced a colour-guessing card trick. Within seconds, the energy changed. The children laughed, the parents smiled, and for a few minutes, strangers became a group of people sharing a moment of wonder.
Why I Never Leave Without Cards
Moments like that are why I always carry cards. They’re more than a tool of the trade — they’re a way to create real human connection, anywhere, any time. The kind of connection that turns an ordinary moment into something memorable.
